Double Stator Cap

Unread post by 2E0SOF silent key »

Made this for the 4 foot Magnetic Loop ...

There are two reasons for this. First, the loop already shows near-ideal Q and bandwidth for the conductor size and length used. Second, each bank of stator vanes on an air variable capacitor fed as a butterfly or split-stator can be connected to the inductor lead in either two or four places, since there are two rods holding the stack together. If two of these four points are connected, that means that the current flowing through any stack of spacers is half of what it would be with a single connection, and if all four points are connected, the current for each point is one quarter of the total current, because the current is fed into the stator stack in a distributed fashion. Some commercial capacitor designs add solid bus bars running from each post of each end of the stack to the corresponding post on the far end of the stack, for just this reason — it keeps I2R losses down by feeding each stack in all four post locations. Similarly, I used copper strap to connect all four stator "corners" for each stator.
