An article has just been published in Nature about the first amateur radio communication system in lunar orbit, Longjiang-2, also known as Lunar-OSCAR 94 or LO-94. It was built by students at the Harbin Institute of Technology.

Two RSGB Board changes.
Professor Phillip Willis, M0PHI
Phillip Willis, M0PHI has decided recently to stand down as a Board Director for personal reasons. Philip was a Nominated Director until April 2020 when he was co-opted to join the Board for a further period to continue his work with the Spectrum Forum and to assume a new responsibility for the Regional Team. Before joining the Board in 2017, Philip had Chaired the Training and Education Committee (TEC) for some years.

Philip was co-Director for the Representation Team and provided support to dialogues with external strategic partner organisations, including Ofcom and the IARU.

During his time on the Board, Philip oversaw the RSGB strategic priority of ‘Organisation’. To increase the sharing of expertise, he developed, implemented and supported the change of the Society’s structure into a more focused ‘Delivery team’ approach. The Board would like to thank him for his work as a Board Director.

Mike Bruce, M0ITI
Mike Bruce, M0ITI recently resigned from the Board following a period working with the Examinations Standards Committee (ESC) and the Examinations Syllabus Review Group (ESRG). Previously he held the role of Examinations Systems Review Manager, researching potential changes to the examinations systems platforms. Mike joined the examinations team as a member of the Examinations Group in 2016 where he brought his expertise to both the detailed work of updating the syllabus and, more especially, the creation of a flexible and efficient platform for updating and publishing syllabus editorial changes.

Mike was co-Director for the Learning Team, which recently has been extremely successful in leading the team’s strategic priority of ‘Growth’. Membership is running at a record level and the number of exams being taken is beyond all estimates.

The Board would like to thank Mike for his work on the Board and is delighted that he is going to continue to work within the examination teams.

June RSGB board meetings would seem to show a increase in membership and exams stats.

"Increased interest in amateur radio and the RSGB continues, with very positive
engagement with the media, public, non-members and members - resulting in excellent
membership, book sales, exam bookings, finances and web traffic – all under difficult
Covid-19 working conditions. The RSGB staff continue to work from home with only
occasional and essential office visits.

(ii) Second major month-on-month increase in membership, now standing at 21,311 - the
highest number since 2011.

(iii) Book sales are positive especially training and education topics.

(iv) Finances are positive, with a reduced deficit forecast for the remainder of the year.

(v) Foundation exams under the online remote invigilation scheme are extremely positive
with over 300 exams held in May.

(vi) A new online booking system attracted over 300 bookings in 5 days when launched.

(vii) Very successful communications campaigns continue focussed on Get on the air to
care with the NHS, but including a very wide range of Society activities to support radio
amateurs and bring the hobby to the attention of the media.

(viii) Interest in amateur radio in the UK is extremely high and the VLT have been asked to
consider how they will support new and returning radio amateurs.

Exam statistics – DW reported 464 candidates have registered for exams online
since the launch of remote invigilation. To date in 2020, 904 candidates have sat
their exam at Foundation level with a 92.7% success rate. The average age of
candidates is 46 for males and 39 for females "

So the new exams are bringing large numbers into the hobby!

Yes and their bringing in a lot of clowns that are disrespectful, you only have to trawl Facebook selling sites to read and see some of these newly licensed antics.
Their that bothered their selling equipment showng 27.555 on a display and when being pulled up they are oblivious to the criticism and obviously show the hobby zero respect, it's proving to me their is little if any positives to be taken from this whole fiasco.
I've have met a few good new operators on air but the stuff im reading and observing on the internet is diabolical.

I have seen interest from some were interested before, and didn't continue, who are now interested again.

One of them is my 10 year old, so if it does it for him, I will count it as a success.

CB is dead, I can't believe that very many people will take the foundation just to advance their CB activities, after all there is so little regulation, they could just but amateur equipment and a 3kW amp and use it anyway.

In time, most of the undesirables will fall by the wayside, and we will be left with a couple of amateurs, but at least that couple is better than none.

Online exams and training – updated web pages.
We’ve updated some of our web pages to reflect online remote invigilation exams and online training processes whilst physical meetings are still restricted.

The Student Information section on the Society’s website has full Candidate Instructions for the remote invigilation exams, information about how to book your exams as well as a new page listing the online training providers that we are aware of.

If your club is providing online training at any licence level and is not listed, please send full details to exams@rsgb.org.uk and we will add you to the new web list.

New Legacy Committee Chair appointed
The Board is pleased to announce the appointment of Emily Groves, M7MLE as the new Chair of the RSGB Legacy Committee. Emily will be working alongside the Committee to promote the availability of the RSGB legacy funds and to advise the Board regarding applications from projects seeking legacy funding.

Emily is the co-founder and Director of a Community Interest Company set up with a friend. The Company provides work experience for young people who want to get into coding as a career, but the usual avenues are not easily open to them.

Her day job is working for a housing association, as their Data Services Manager.

The RSGB Legacy Fund, thanks to the generosity of donors, has resources available to encourage and develop amateur radio. Some excellent projects have already been supported. However, the fund is able to do more and, to succeed, it needs good proposals. Its objectives are deliberately wide and projects must make a difference for lots of people.
